I have now seen Wanda three times in a short period of time in an attempt to understand the greatness of the story which lies in Wanda's character - or Barbara Loden`s ?... or are they the same person ? Wanda's "life is what happens", not what constructed burdens expected from her. Her road trip is a tribute to those who never had a choice, a voice, or the courage / opportunity to change direction. Wanda moves aimlessly through the American landscape with a kind of contemplative resignation towards an unplanned and unknown future. Sometimes you get the feeling that you are watching a documentary .... naked, raw and unpretentious. One thing is for sure - no male could ever have made this movie. A timeless and beautiful American masterpiece and an unforgettable portrait of a woman.
